It might be 10 more days until the official start of summer, but many of us are already feeling that summer heat. People everywhere are running their A/Cs more and more to combat the rising heat and humidity, and it will continue to increase throughout the summer months. With increased A/C usage comes increased air filter replacement requirements – Increased A/C usage goes hand in hand with the frequency of filter changeouts required.
While air conditioners are working continuously to keep us cool and comfortable, air filters are working hard too – gathering and filtering more dirt, dust, and other air pollutants faster than usual; thus, requiring more frequent replacements. If not replaced/changed more frequently during the summer, filtered pollutants that are trapped in the filter can hinder the performance and efficiency of your air conditioner. This can potentially lead to higher energy bill costs, damage and costly repairs (who wants to be without A/C in this weather for even a short amount of time!), and overall restricted airflow that make it harder to cool down your home/office space.
A good rule of thumb? Change or inspect your air filter every 30 days during months of high A/C usage (depending on your filter type and environment).
Not sure if your filter is ready for replacement? Remove your air intake grill and examine the air filter. If there is a thick coating of dust and grim covering most of the filter and you are unable to see the filter media, it is probably a good idea for a changeout. If you can still see the filter media under a light layer of dirt, your air filter still has some life left in it. But when in doubt, opt for a new filter.
