HVAC Air Filter Efficiency Ratings

Placement of air filters within a building's ventilation system can block airborne particulates that can include, animal dander, pollen, mold spores, bacteria and viruses depending on the Minimum Efficiency Rating Value (MERV) of your air filters. For an HVAC system, it is recommended that you use commercial HVAC filters with a MERV rating between 10 and 13. The higher the rating, the more contaminants that will be blocked and therefore will result in better protection of the equipment and building occupants.

How often should HVAC filters be changed?

Your air filter should be changed roughly every 1 to 3 months depending on your environment’s foot traffic. Below is a filter changeout recommendation chart based on the number of occupants and pets in your home/office. Because every filter environment is different, we suggest you periodically check your filters for dirt and dust. A good rule of thumb: Replace your filter if the filter material is no longer visible and there is a thick layer of dirt and dust coating it.

What happens if you don’t change an HVAC filter?

When your air filter isn’t regularly replaced and is dirty it makes it harder for air to pass through the filter, this is known as airflow restriction. When airflow is restricted by a dirty filter your HVAC unit must work longer and harder to produce your desired room temperature. This airflow restriction can put a stain and can potentially cause damage to your unit. Not changing out your air filter can also cause your energy bill to increase, when an HVAC unit is having to work harder and is staying on longer it increases your energy consumption and costs.

How do you change an HVAC filter?

1. Make sure you have the correct size replacement filter.

  • Not sure? Most air filters have the size printed on the outside of the frame, so check to see what size filter is currently in your air return.
  • Can’t find the size? Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to measure your filter.

2. Turn your air conditioning unit completely off. This helps prevent any loose dirt and debris from being sucked back into the a/c unit, which can cause potential equipment damage and cause contaminates to recirculate.

  • Can’t find the on/off switch on the thermostat? Locate your breaker box and switch off power from there.

3. Open your air return grill, remove your old filter and dispose of it. We recommend placing the old filter in an empty trash bag to help contain contaminants.

4. Insert the new filter. Make sure that the arrow points away from the return and toward the air handler.

5. Close air return grill and lock back into place.

6. Sit back, relax, and breathe in quality air and enjoy lower electricity costs.

How do I know if HVAC filter needs changing?

Since every filter environment is different, we suggest you periodically check your filters for dirt and dust every 1 to 3 months or if you see a buildup of debris on your filter’s grill it’s probably an indication it’s time for a replacement. A good rule of thumb: Replace your filter if the filter material is no longer visible and there is a thick layer of dirt and dust coating it.
