Did you know that Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is ranked as one of the top five environmental risks to public health? With children being some of the most vulnerable to poor air quality, it is important that our schools and universities have quality air filtration systems in place. Many airborne contaminants can be captured using the correct air filters and with regular filter changeouts and HVAC maintenance. Many schools and universities have diverse campuses with laboratories, kitchens, darkrooms, locker rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, cafeterias, gymnasiums, that all have unique HVAC requirements. Air Filters Incorporated offers a variety of quality air filtration products and solutions that fit the needs of the entire campus, providing students and staff with healthy indoor air quality.
Improving Air Quality Can:
- Increase student and staff performance
- Increase student and staff productivity
- Reduces the risk of long-term health issues
- Reduce student and staff absenteeism
- Reduce campus and facility deterioration
Air Filtration for School Reopenings
The upcoming school year is quickly approaching and unfortunately, COVID-19 is sticking around for it. While some school districts and campuses are planning to hold classes remotely, many are still anticipating opening their campuses for students and staff in the fall. This will require building engineers and operators to prepare and look for ways to make their campuses safer during this pandemic.
COVID-19 spreads mainly from person-to-person contact in respiratory droplets and aerosols transmitted through coughing, sneezing, and talking. While cleaning surfaces, washing hands, wearing facemasks, and social distancing can help stop the spread of COVID-19, it will not eradicate the smaller, lighter droplets that can float and linger in the air. Additionally, elimination of all COVID-19 risk is not entirely possible, but you can help reduce the spread and remove dangerous particles that are traveling through the air by simply upgrading the campus’ air filters where feasible. Upgrading to high-efficiency air filters, ensuring that ventilation systems are properly maintained, and increasing outdoor air ventilation can help reduce the spread of the disease and improve the indoor air quality (IAQ).
Many schools and universities use standard MERV 8 rated filters for their general HVAC and replacing them with high-efficiency MERV 13 filters, like the Astro-Pleat: MERV 13, they can better protect students, teachers, and staff. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends upgrading air filters to the, “…highest Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) applicable for the HVAC units (local, central and DOAS).
MERV 13 is recommended minimum if equipment can accommodate pressure drop.” The MERV 13 rated air filters can capture fine particles as small as 0.3 microns and by using a synthetic media that is electrostatically charged, provides high performance of sub-micron particle removal, effectively reducing the transmission of COVID-19.
For added protection or for areas where MERV 13 filters cannot be installed, campuses and schools can install a multi-stage air filtration and purification system that can work alongside their existing HVAC system. The Aire-Loc: Healthcare Filter Housing & Air Purification System (HFH) is designed to protect and provide healthy, clean air throughout the facility by filtering polluted air through 3 stages of filtration and a UV light.
- Stage 1: First, air passes through a MERV 13 pleated filter.
- Stage 2: Next, it flows through a flocked honeycomb carbon filter for odor removal.
- Stage 3: Third, the UV-C light sterilizes the air.
- Stage 4: Finally, air passes through a HEPA 99.99% filter.
Although these units were specifically designed for healthcare and medical applications, they are perfect for any environment where having clean air is crucial. The Aire-Loc: HFH is a free-standing unit and is available in a horizontal or vertical configuration with a side-access door, making installation and maintenance simple for use anywhere – attics, closets, rooftops, etc. The standard Aire-Loc™: HFH can clean and filter the air in six 12X12 rooms, 12 times every hour, but is available in any custom configuration to fit your application and building size.
