Filters for Air Conditioning Systems

The main purposes of a Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system is to help maintain good indoor air quality through adequate ventilation with filtration and provide thermal comfort. Proper air filtration and care for HVAC filters will result in better conditions and air quality for occupants of the building as well as increase the efficiency and longevity of the HVAC system.

HVAC Air Filter Efficiency Ratings

Placement of air filters within a buildings ventilation system can block airborne particulates that can include, animal dander, pollen, mold spores, bacteria and viruses depending on the Minimum Efficiency Rating Value (MERV) of your air filters. For an HVAC system, it is recommended that you use filters for air conditioning systems with a MERV rating between 8 and 13. The higher the rating, the more contaminants that will be blocked and therefore will result in better protection of the equipment and building occupants.

Features & Benefits of Filters for HVAC:

  • Available in standard and custom sizes
  • Available in MERV 6, 8, 11 and 13
  • Can last up to 3-6 months
  • Filter harmful particulates to keep you safe from allergens & bacteria

How often should HVAC filters be changed?

  • Your air filter should be changed roughly every 1 to 3 months depending on your environment’s foot traffic. Below is a filter changeout recommendation chart based on the number of occupants and pets in your home/office.  Because every filter environment is different, we suggest you periodically check your filters for dirt and dust. A good rule of thumb: Replace your filter if the filter material is no longer visible and there is a thick layer of dirt and dust coating it.

What happens if you don’t change an HVAC filter?

  • When your air filter isn’t regularly replaced and is dirty it makes it harder for air to pass through the filter, this is known as air flow restriction. When air flow is restricted by a dirty filter your HVAC unit must work longer and harder to produce your desired room temperature. This air flow restriction can put stain and can potentially cause damage to your unit. Not changing out your air filter can also cause your energy bill to increase, when an HVAC unit is having to work harder and is staying on longer it increases your energy consumption and costs.
