DIY COVID-19 Face Masks

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommended the use of face masks or face coverings to help reduce and slow the spread of the COVID-19. Because personal protective equipment (PPE) like N95 masks are in short supply, many of us have resorted to buying cloth coverings or making homemade face masks.

Why is it important to wear masks?

Wearing facemasks in public settings can help stop the spread of community-based transmission and should be worn when going into public spaces like the grocery store or pharmacy. Although PPE masks like the N95 mask are the only facemask known to prevent the spread of COVID-19/coronavirus, a DIY cloth facemask is better than no facemask at all. Here we offer a step by guide to creating your DIY face mask plus a downloadable face mask pattern!

Important Considerations

  • Ensure the mask is properly fitted and rests snugly against your face
  • Allow for optimal breathing
  • REMINDER: The wearing of a mask is not a substitution for social distancing. Follow your state and the CDC's guidelines.

Our filter media suggestions

  • Our MERV 13 Filter Media is a great option that can filter out fine particles as small as 0.3 microns. It's synthetic with electrostatic charges that can provide high performance of sub-micron particle removal in the air
  • Our Meltblown Polypropylene (PP) Media can provide an extra layer of filtration and protection with an equivalent rating of Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) 95% and 98% per ASTM F2101 and EN 14683. These are ideal to make ASTM Level 1, 2, and 3 medical facemasks

Step By Step Guide

Materials Needed:

Part 1

  1. Stack pieces of cloth on top of each other. Put right sides of the fabric together. Put template down and hold it in place.
  2. Trace with the template 2 times.
  3. After tracing, put pins together to hold them in place. Cut around the traced area to create 4 pieces of fabric.

Part 2: Strips or Bias Tape Replacement

  1. Cut 4 strips - 1.25in by 25in long
  2. Fold each strip in half and iron it. Open it back up and meet the two sides together in the middle. Iron again. All raw edges should be inside.
  3. 1 side of the strip- open it up, press with the iron, fold two edges together, press again.
  4. Fold strip in half, one last time.

Part 3

  1. Start with curved edge with 0.25 in seam allowance. Sew the curve together on all 4 pieces.
  2. For the strips - start with the point not tuck and sew together.
  3. Result: 3 ties, sewn and 4 pieces of fabric.

Part 4: Assembly

  1. Take 1 piece of fabric. Coil the strips together and place onto the piece.
  2. Place second piece of fabric on top.
  3. Using pins, pin the fabric and strips together. Be sure to leave an opening on one side to turn the sewn mask right side out.
  4. Sew together and complete the same process with the other 2 pieces of fabric, without the strips.
  5. Turn the masks right side out and press with an iron.

Part 5: Nose Wire

  1. Take pliers and turn over the edges.
  2. Tape wire together with medical tape.
  3. Press the two wires together. Cut tape slots to fold over.
  4. Measure the size of the nose wire and mark where placement will be on the mask.
  5. Sew outer sides of the mask together, leaving the space for the wire open.
  6. Using the side opening of the mask, insert the nose wire.

Part 6: Addition of Air Filter Media

  1. Place 2nd side of the mask on top of the first.
  2. Place pins to hold in place.
  3. Sew together.
  4. Outline the mask on the filter media. Cut as needed.
  5. Place media inside of the mask.

Cleaning and Removal

As you wear your mask in public places, it is important frequently wash your mask. Remove the added filter media and run the mask through a washing machine. Remember: when removing the mask after use, refrain from touching your eyes and mouth and properly sanitize or clean your hands.
